I doubt people who are genuinely not ready to come out somehow get pressured into it for National Coming Out Day. The people who come out on National Coming Out Day are probably those who were pretty much ready to come out and maybe needed an excuse or a little nudge. Judging from what people have posted in journals and communities, some of them are people who were out to some people and used the occasion to come out to a few more, or even just one more.
And it's a day where people who are already out to one degree or another (like Jamie, for instance) make themselves a little more visible for a day, as part of a statement to the rest of the world that we're here (and that we're everywhere) and a statement to other people who are gay that they are not alone.
"make themselves a little more visible for a day."
I see nothing wrong with that. But what about them Gay Pride Parades that go on all over the place? People who aren't gay see them and think all gay people are like that. I think those parades hurt gay people more than help.
Since gay rights have advanced a lot over the time of my lifetime, I'm not sure the pride parades are doing much harm if they're doing harm at all. Gay marriage was a joke ten years ago and now it's legal everywhere in your country and in one part of mine. Most other movements for equal rights took a lot longer. When slavery ended in the U.S., it was another 100 years before blacks could vote. The movement to let women vote took generations. It took 51 years from women being able to vote here in Wyoming to women being able to vote nationwide. Gay rights has been on fast forward compared to all of that

Jordan, some people need a little help, I think to some degree it encourages certain people that a day has been set aside for it, this doesn't mean I don't agree with you, it's like people who need News Years Day to make a resolution about something in their life.
I'm not going to tell everybody I'm gay just because some guy with time on his hands thought up a special day to do it. The next thing you know Hallmark will be selling Coming Out Day cards. (Come to think of it, I'd buy some probably LOL. BTW Jordan we haven't chatted in a while, go on msn sometime or email me. :-) eric k. (the other one)
