More about fitness classes

All I post about is gym/yoga/group fitness, work, trans crap (still? Shouldn't I be over that already?), and being somewhat socially isolated. Hm, related maybe? Freelance + work out addiction + weird minority status= isolation? Eh. Whatever ( Read more... )

You know, all the rage right now is these ballet fitness classes - I think they're called Barre or something. Sounds like they might be right up your alley.

Audit a community college course? king_orbison June 4 2010, 14:06:20 UTC
My roommate has been auditing a modern dance class at Miami Dade College. There was some fee associated - but I imagine that with so many performing & fine arts schools there's gotta be a way for you to "audit" a beginning course.

I haven't thought of that route.. it'd have to be a pretty low down, non-professional level community college class though. Just walking past Ailey makes me feel inadequate..

i have actually been wanting to take ballet classes, too.
i did when i was 5, and loved it.
until another girl with my name (who spelled it with a "j", but i suppose that wasnt really her fault) joined the class.
everytime the teacher would say "gillian", id start doing something, but she was actually calling on "jillian".
its like the girl was the new, improved me.
wow, i had problems when i was 5....this may explain some stuff.

It sounds like a lot of people have ballet trauma!

My parents forced me to do ballet when I was 5. I fucking hated every moment of it, also due in part to a ballet nemesis (who didn't share my name, but boy was she a bitch!), until it was recital time and I got to parade around in spandex, sequins, and Jon Bennet Ramsey make up which almost made it worth it.

Would the people at fitness "barre" class at the gym be weirded out if I show up in a little girl leotard with overdone canary make up?

Gee I wonder...

There should certainly be a way to find a beginners adult class. When I was 15 I tried to pick up ballet (after having to quit when I wad 10 due to moving/money). I started out in a class with girls my age, but they were all beyond beginners, so they switched me into the adult class were it was just me and some guy who had never danced before. The teacher ended up telling me that I have bad feet for ballet (which is kind of true, they're not very sturdy). So, yeah, you should be able to find something!

It sounds pretty easy to fall through the cracks of ballet classes offered. Either its serious folks or... you and some random weirdo.

Ballet teachers can be so brutal about feet! Apparently, its common for dancers to be told "forget about it.. you don't have the feet, you'll never make it". I swore that I would never submit myself to that kind of judgement until every pilates teacher/dancer/retired dance teacher massage therapist started telling me that they'd kill for my arches. Now I want to use the arches I've apparently been wasting all this time!
