Anticipation

On somewhat spur of the moment, karenjeane decided to attend this year's Worldcon in Montreal in August. Neither of us has ever been on a vacation together, or been on a vacation anywhere in many years. Our days and months have been ones of wage slavery, but we have little money to show for it. I would imagine going to Worldcon for your first convention is akin to attending the World Figure Skating Championships as your first competition (which I've done). Everything else is going to pale in comparison.

That said, have a blast!

I suppose, but Worldcon doesn't seem as large or flashy as the other cons, which are more TV/movie oriented than Worldcon.

So Worldcon is more speculative fiction than media con? Interesting. Fredericton had a small one called Inconsequential for a few years, and is was excellent. Therefore you should have a blast.

Well, Worldcon was founded for science fiction writing back in 1939, so it's focus has generally remained on the writing. The media cons are both bigger and later, since I find most people who admit to liking science fiction almost never read the stuff, or just read spin offs and fan fic of movies and TV.
