Glasses are ridiculously cheap here. I walked into a shop, they put my old glasses in a contraption to read the prescription, made me some new lenses and they were done in half an hour for about 15000, including frames (I have really bad eyes). Didn't need to see the doctor.

I'm a little confused why you mentioned not having insurance in your home country. I don't know anyone on JET who does.

Some people under 25 (or whatever age) can still be covered under their parents' insurance. That's how it was for me, so I'm sure maybe SOME people have that option available to them.

You shouldn't need to worry about insurance or doctors. I got an in-store eye exam free with my already ridiculously cheap glasses.

I bought glasses when my old ones cracked a lens! I think I sat on them?
It's very possible your old lenses won't fit into new frames. Just go to a glasses shop, and bring your old glasses. They can find out your prescription from those lenses, and then do a quick eye tests (with the crazygoggles) to make sure it hasn't changed.
Pretty sure insurance doesn't cover it, but you can get a new set for as cheap as 1man, usually under 2man, but it will cost more if you get something very fancy or need special lenses.

I'm about to get a new pair myself, because my students love playing with my glasses. I need a backup for when these are pulled in half!

1man! I bought a pair in the Sapporo Tokyu Hands last year for 5000, prescription and all... and they were done in half an hour. CRAZY.
