Question about Post-JET health insurance

This question goes out to any former-JETs who are back in America. More specifically, this is for anyone who has a pre-existing condition that requires health insurance coverage. When you returned to America, and tried to get health insurance, what sort of proof, if any, did you need to provide to show you had insurance in Japan

Surely the doctor you saw in Japan must have records of your visits and a photocopy of your insurance card?

I had the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from my local Consulate of Japan send my insurance company a letter saying I was insured while in Japan.
