Thinking about the health check...

Okay, without any undue embarrassment, I am wondering if my weight might be an issue to pass the "Health Check." I mean, overweight=unhealthy. How picky are we talking here? I mean, I definitely need to loose the gut (well, the BUTT), but it is not like I can't go up stairs and whatnot. On the other hand, I will probably be the heaviest thing ( Read more... )

My experience was that it wasn't a big deal at all. I wound up getting something that I didn't even need to have (an X-ray, I think). I assume if you're free of any debilitating issues such as heart conditions or being on dialysis or something, you'll pass muster.

I've never heard of someone being dropped just because they couldn't shop in the Jrs. section :/

I knew JETs of all sizes, though the majority were a healthy/average weight. IDK about the health check, but if your doctor doesn't say "THIS IS A HUGE FLAMING ISSUE" I kind of doubt it will impact your acceptance. That said, if you are accepted to the program people of all ages will talk to you about it very abruptly and point out your weight in awkward and embarrassing ways, but you'll just have to be prepared for that.

The biggest issue is that buying clothes will be next to impossible - I wear size ten petite and I fit XLs/plus sized clothes in Japanese department stores.

I'm roughly the same size (very short and round) and I've found that there's a huge selection of great fashionable Japanese clothes if you venture online. Rakuten shops (especially those aimed at larger clients) have very helpful guides to describe how a certain garment will fit someone of a certain shape--such as having staff members of varying sizes and shapes try on the clothes and then comment on the fit :)

One of my favorite places "Andit" stocks from size S to 6L.

As long as you don't have any huge health issues otherwise, you should be just fine. My friend was very, very heavy at the time of applying and I had my doubts that they would accept him, but they did - and now he's lost a ton of weight in Japan!

The fact that you seem to have a sense of humor and are being realistic about your weight will help you, because if you make it over here you are almost sure to get crap about it (I do and I'm a US size 6) and, odds are they will ask you about how you would react to that at your interview.

I can absolutely guarantee you will not be the biggest person on JET if you get accepted. Some people are absolutely HUEG and got on.

Everyone else pretty much said it. Unless you are actually physically unhealthy, your weight shouldn't matter. I know plenty of 'heavy' JETs, and I was pretty darn big when I first got here(I've since slimmed down considerably. I can now wear Japanese sizes, holy shit), and none of it is an issue. Just make sure you have a decently thick skin, because kids can be brutal sometimes. :C
