Conference for Returning JETs - Is it worth it?

Dec 20, 2010 16:47

The returners conference is coming up again. I am torn between wanting to spend those three days working with my kids and wondering what it's all about. Also I am planning on trying to get back into science, particularly Biology, when I go home and I see that the workshops are almost all focused on business or teaching ( Read more... )

I didn't go the year I left (last year), but several friends did. They weren't really impressed with the conference as humanities majors. I'm a biologist myself, and they told me I would have gotten nothing out of it. So my second-hand vote would to to skip it.

Sorry about the late reply! Thank you very much for your advice. I took a look at the potential seminar subjects and thought that might be the case.

I thought it was very good. In my case, though, it was a waste: they gave me tons of great ideas that I wish I'd had before I'd applied to graduate school. I wish they let you go the year before you decide not to recontract. Most of the ideas I liked took a lot more preparation and seem to be aimed at people who didn't make plans before leaving and are intending to sit around for a year. Which didn't surprise me or anything; what other kind of information would it be? Still, I wish it had been earlier.

That said, I thought they presented quite a lot of good ideas. It was the best CLAIR event I'd been to.

Sorry about the late response. Thank you very much. I appreciate the insight. I'd rather not sit around a year but it's good to know there's something useful there.

Maybe I should clarify...not all the options required sitting around for a year, but a lot of the people going to the conference seemed to be planning on doing that if the conference didn't give them a better idea. And then a lot of those better ideas required application times of, often, up to a year. But not all of them were like that.

Anyway, you're quite welcome!

Sorry my reply is so late. Thank you! That's really good to know. In that case I may try to leech copies of the resume handouts off of friends who are going.
