"Well, that was stupid. Putting fire locks on with the Avatar--"
"I don't firebend," Aang said hurriedly.
Jet looked at him.
"I... I made a mistake once--"(he glanced over at Katara)"-- and I'm not gonna firebend until I get a master."
Jet nodded, and moved toward the lock and pulled a piece of wire from inside his armguards. The others watched in mild-interest as for the next half an hour trying to pick the lock. He finally sighed and leaned against the wall. "I guess we'll just have to take down the guards when we reach the capital."
At the rebel's statement, Aang hung his head, Katara crossed her arms and Sokka slipped his hands into this pockets.
"No we won't," Sokka said suddenly as he pulled something out of his pockets.
"What," Jet asked dryly, "did you just learn how to firebend?"
The Water Tribesman looked over at the rebel, a grin on his face, his eyes closing lazily. "Yep."
"You're mental."
Sokka's eyes snapped open, and he flashed a victorious smirk at his enemy. Turning towards Aang, he asked "How fast can you switch styles of bending?"
He scratched the back of his head. "I dunno... fast?"
"Okay, here's what you need to do."
Aang levitated the flint, looking dubiously at Sokka. "Are you sure it will work?"
"It should. Now try and open Katara's door."
The rocks fell to the floor, Aang looking at Sokka with absolute horror.
"Okay, open my door then."
The Avatar gulped, and the rocks seemed to shake in midair.
"Aang, calm down. You just need to earthbend the rocks together only enough to make a spark, then airbend the spark towards the lock. If it doesn't work, no harm done. If it works, we all get out free."
"But what if I burn you?"
"Katara can heal me with her glowy hands."
"Incase you've forgotten," Katara snapped, "they've drugged my food; I can't bend."
"Oh yea," Sokka shrugged off his worry, reminding his friend that "You've done small stuff like this before, you can do it now."
Reassured, Aang arranged the flint into position. He thrust his left fist forward to spark the rocks, and followed up instantly with a blast of air.
The four watched (Aang in joy, Sokka and Katara in relief, Jet in disbelief) as a small flame was "bended" into the lock.
With a speed and confidence suiting the Avatar, Aang quickly freed the Water Tribe girl and himself. They hurried toward the door, and Aang turned around to see Sokka hesitating.
"Sokka, you coming?"
"Yea, I'll be just a second," he assured the airbender.
As soon as Aang was out of his sight, Sokka turned and stood before Jet's cell.
"What," Sokka said with mock surprise, "a well-known rebel such as yourself doesn't know how to fake bend?"
Jet's tense shoulders and dark scowl was enough of an answer.
"Hm..." Sokka's brow furrowed, as if deep in though. At last, he came to a conclusion: "Too bad."
So pleased was he at leaving Jet in the cell as he went free, Sokka didn't notice as he almost ran into Aang. He blinked a few times at the shorter boy, then asked, "Why are you coming back?"
"The other door is locked."
The Water Tribe boy's eyes widened at the detail. "...and?"
"I don't understand how to break locks with waterbending, so..."
Sokka followed his friend's gaze and found himself looking at the smirking rebel. "Damn."
