I called the hospital and asked to speak with the nurse. I'm very proud of how i handled the situation. My mother had told me earlier that the doctor told her that he didn't know if she would make it through the night. The nurse told me that she had recently woken up and wasn't feeling any pain. i'm sorry to hear that your grandmother is so ill. but, i wouldn't necessarily take how your grandmother sounded on the phone last night as a sign not to be positive or anything. the effects of the anesthesia from the surgery (and whatever other medications they are using to manage her pain right now) are pretty significant, and can be longer-lasting in people who are older.

my father (who is 75), for example, had a triple bypass last summer, and it took over 24 hours from the time the anesthesia wore off for him to be "with-it" again. and the pain medications can make them pretty spacy too.

i hope the doctors have some options for your grandmother to improve her condition and that you see some improvement soon.
