Nice!! I think negative space is my favorite =) (Completely tangential side-note: I always wish I could make a great negative space icon when I see someone else make one! For me they do NOT come naturally and they are really really hard for me to do ... never been pleased with one I've made yet!! Oh well lol).

Well I should really make a better note of how I did that, but it helps to start with a good picture that already has some negative space. The original for this pic already had a nice dark quality around it. I think I copied the layer, and I love love love my smudge brush to soften the layer around the subject. Another tip, I guess, is to eyedrop out the a color from the background. I think it helps get the coloring more accurate...

Then again, I'm absolutely rubbish at using brushes and textures (which you do marvelously).
