The first time I saw the film, I saw the replicants as robots. After seeing it again (and again) they bend the definition of robot. They are definitely synthetic, but more realistically human than a Synth like Bishop from Alien.
There was a difference between humans and replicants, even those that did not want to be slaves had a huge difference. There were program limitations. They were only capable of concrete thinking. There was imagination but it was limited to other people's descriptions. i.e. I imagine unicorns, but because someone else had described it. I believe that in this movie the point is supposed to be that most robots/replicants did not behave the way those in the movie did. Most did what they were programmed to do and got on with it. The point was how close to humans can a machine be before it earns itself a soul. I also swear Scott would fail the replicant test. He would also get stuck on the turtle in the desert question.
