it's a bad business when you can't even work up the enthusiasm to bullet point what's been happening... so let's cut to the chase. i got a £25 gift voucher pat on the back from work that i can redeem at a whole host of online retailers and i'm thinking of some new music ( Read more... )

can't say that i'd been paying any attention to Hecq, i'd written them off. i've just been listening to the samples on the Hymen page and it's not really pushing my buttons. i've come across a lot of stuff in that vein on various netlabels. it's nice but i'm looking for something a wee bit different.

Can you redeem said vouchers at Boomkat, because £25 would pretty much get you the entire Type back catalogue at the moment.

Most of the new stuff I've been listening to has been modern classical - especially Polish composers - I'd recommend anything by Gorecki, Kilar or Preisner (£25 would get you his "Three Colours..." soundtrack box set and make me a jealous man)

Oh, and the new Olafur Arnalds is frighteningly good.

I've never really gotten into the Type stuff i've heard (and has John Xela went off on a brutal noise tangent these days?) and i couldn't use it for there anyway. I think I'm looking for something more poppy than modern classical but maybe that is a better option than a.n.other monitor tanned electronica bod.

though, i just found out about this >>> http://basicchannel.com/item/BCD-2

so i've got it all on vinyl, it's just going to be fucking awesome. i think part of my problem has been solved if i can find a stockist for use with my voucher.

The new Styrofoam CD is pretty damn awesome if you want something a bit poppier...and, if you haven't already done so, check out Battles - the math-jazz-rock band on Warp...and don't let the helium vocals put you off, they will grow on you.

I saw the BCD2 on Boomkat - going to have to invest! In fact, I'll probably be putting in a big order to Boomkat before I go - seems that there isn't a US equivalent...so I'll be relying on, urgh, Amazon...

once you're over Stateside (yeh, check me, i got the lingo) if there's stuff that's significantly cheaper to get here let me know and i can pick it up and send over. i'm pretty sure my postage and packing charges would be a little less inventive than most ebayers.

kind of like with Tony's suggestion, it would seem i'm out the loop with Hymen in general. again just listening to it and it seems a bit "monitor tan" for me if you know what i mean.

Gah! This is where my mind goes blank. Not new at all but I always recommend that people pick up the Postal Service record if they haven't done. Avalanche have it in their mid-price section so you could probably get it cheapo.

i'll keep them in mind. i've heard bits and pieces that dudes from the band have done elsewhere but never got around to listening to them themselves. are they not linked to The Album Leaf? i got their first album a few years back and it was really nice.

Oooh, yeah, I'd second that recommendation actually - one of my favourite records of 2006. Ben Gibbard has done stuff with Styrofoam, Morr Music and Death Cab For Cutie (obviously and who are also recommended) - the other bloke is the guy from Dntel, but don't let that put you off.

Don't think there's any connection to The Album Leaf, though...aside from the fact they're both on Sub Pop.

i checked Wookiepedia and it's seems i was getting my Jimmmy's confused. Lavelle and Tamborello. it was lucky i didn't get them confused with Mr Nail.

i've heard the stuff he did with Styro on their 2nd last album and it was pretty decent, as per your suggestion above i'll need to keep an eye out for the new Styro along with the Postal Service/Death Cab. Turns out I can't use my voucher online so it'll be pot luck what i come across...
