i was reminded by coming across some really good footage of it on Youtube that I neglected to mention that I saw Shellac live recently. Fantastic really...
Dirty bastard, you should of had some cheese with that.
I would recommend - Ardbeg 10 year old (or the 1990, if you want to splash out £50 odd)or Bowmore 12 years, both are from the Islay region which have the yummy peaty flavour. Alternatively the Balvenie Double wood which I first got for Christmas a couple of years ago which is really nice. Avoid Highland Park at all cost it had a few good reviews and my mum bought it for me at Christmas last year, it was well rank.
I really like Highland Park but I can see why you wouldn't if you're more into the Islay smoke. I got an expression called Cappella which I really enjoyed but it's a very subtle flavour that you have to spend some time with.
i think i maybe just need to experiment with some miniatures to get a feel for the sort of flavours are "my thing". i might just steam into the wee whisky shop in Ayr and put on my best american accent and see just how badly it all pans out...
My own favourite is Caol Ila, it's beautiful, but I was pleasantly surprised by Black Grouse, it's a blend of Famous Grouse with a selection of whiskies from Islay and it manages to jazz up the rather bland-but-solid Grouse with a subtle smokiness. I picked it up in the duty free because it was cheap and I thought it might make a nice friends-are-round-hide-the-good-stuff whisky but it stands up on its own.
Of course, for the really good stuff you want to get yourself to the Whisky Society tasting rooms and have a few drops from their own bottlings. At this time of year, with the open fires a-blazin', it's just heaven.
Aye, they have rooms on George St and down in Leith. The Leith one is, surprisingly, far nicer. If you're hyper-posh then you can go to the one in Switzerland...=)
