Paranormal Activity

Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat

Katie is a college student. Micah is a day trader. They're engaged to be engaged and have recently moved in together. What Katie neglected to tell Micah is that she has been plagued by a spirit/ghost/demon since she was 8 years old. Micah hasn't believed her. He's not a believer in the paranormal and he hasn't seen anything for himself. When he buys a camera to try and document the activity, the entity is provoked and starts acting up.

Filmed entirely from a single-shot camera (Blair Witch and Cloverfield, though less-shaky), this gives the audiences a feel that all of the events are entirely real. The movie, filmed for about $15,000, doesn't offer any special effects; what you see is what you get. And what you don't see is what really gets you.

This movie operates entirely on the element of surprise. You know when the pair is in bed and it gets past 2am, that something is going to happen. Watching the pair sleep, so vulnerable, you can't help but jump and gasp when things and noises come out of no where. The scene goes from being quiet and nearly serene to footsteps getting louder, shadows appearing and the couple being accosted by something that no one can see.

Katie and Micah are believable as a couple going through this traumatizing and paranormal event. She's learned to live with it. He's trying to protect his house and girlfriend. They fight, which provokes the entity even more. The acting is well-done.

If you're looking for a good (intense) watch, Paranormal Activity is worth a look.
