He doesn't want to lose her.

Alani is growing suspicious of his time away from the mansion, of the texts and phone calls he receives and doesn't fill her in on. But there is nothing he can say. When he joined X-Force he'd sworn to keep it a secret and there is no way he can break that promise to his teammates.

Not even if it means losing the girl he's coming to love.

They're together in his room, laying in bed and looking at the shadows on the ceiling when his phone rings. It's the tone that signals it's team related and Josh untangles himself from her and goes into the bathroom so he can listen to the message in peace. When he comes back into the room she's pulling back on her clothes and her expression reminds him of Laurie. Of how she'd looked right before she was gunned down.

"Another call," Alani murmurs, glancing at the phone he's stuffing into a bag. "And you're leaving again."

Josh tries to be nonchalant about it, tries to shrug it away but the hurt in her eyes makes him sigh. "I...gotta, 'Lani."

She nods and he knows she thinks it's another girl. Or drinking again with Julian.

He wants to tell her the truth, to make the pain go away, but as she walks out of the room he knows he can't.

Maybe this is the only way to protect her.

He can't bear losing her like Laurie. He won't let anyone else die.
