So, this closure thing.

I become really annoyed when I see people going off the deep end about events and putting ridiculous political spins on them. Take base closures and the BRAC list... I had no idea that so many have begun to adhere to this nonsensical idea that somehow the fact that there is a higher proportion of New England bases on the least means that President ( Read more... )

I'm not one to root for bases staying alive, as I am not always for the military, but those are my own reasons and different and not important here. But as for Portsmouth, you say that the equipment is outdated and their work isnt as good anymore. Portsmouth has some of the best workers out there, all of the work they do gets done ahead of schedule, under budget and is perfect. And you say that there are other shipyards out there that can do better jobs, I'll stand by Portsmouth and the work they put out. I am not saying this because I know workers there but because of what I have seen and know they accomplish. This is just how I feel.

And I'm one of those crazy northeastern liberals that has blamed Rumsfeld not bush, haha. I'm just trying to let you know where I stand on this issue and that there are liberals who do know what they are talking about. I do see the need to close a lot of the bases, but I just dont think it is a wise Idea to close Portsmouth.

Right, simply wanting to save Portsmouth is not going off the deep end; I don't think I want to see Portsmouth closed. I would rather see it become a Naval Station or something, but there's a cost-benefit analysis that says that it's not going to happen. The commission will investigate Portsmouth in the next few months. Even if it loses it's "military landlord" the Shipyard can still conduct business, and possibly contract with the government as a private shipyard. I believe that their work is excellent, and hopefully the commission will find the same so that even if the base is closed, the workers will still have a job to do under a private shipyard authority.

I guess I should have explained previously that I don't personally want all of the proposed bases to be closed, but that I only presented the opinions that I have gathered on why the aforementioned bases are on the list; however, a lot of them should be closed for the sake of streamlining the military.
