I was bored earlier this week, so I came up with a list (and, for the most part, clips) of the 21 best moments in Glee so far. Watch and enjoy!
21. "Take a Bow" (Episode 2)
No, it's not the most impressive number ever, but the reason it's listed is because Rachel does the song a hundred times better than Rihanna.

20. Kurt comes out to Mercedes (Episode 3)
Mercedes was under the impression that Kurt was in love with Rachel, and was clearly the only one who didn't know his true intentions. She is (hilariously) shocked, and it's just so clear that this is something that, despite his self-expression, he is clearly ashamed of.

19. "Endless Love" (Episode 10)
This is up here for pretty much one reason: Will's facial expressions.

18. Sue writes in her journal (Episode 6)
"Dear Journal,
Feeling listless again today. It began at dawn, when I tried to make a smoothie out of beef bones, breaking my juicer. And then at Cheerios practice, disaster.
"It was unmistakable. It was like spotting the first spark on the Hindenburg." [One cheerleader's knee briefly shakes.] "A quiver! That quiver will lose us nationals. And without the championship, I'll lose my endorsements. And without those endorsements, I won't be able to buy my hovercraft…"

17. Puck's vignette about Judaism (Episode 8)
"…it reminded me of the time that my family ordered Chinese food and sat down for our annual Simchas Torah screening of Schindler's List. It wasn't the most normal tradition, but we did for my mom. She said it made her feel connected to her Jewish roots.
"As she was handing me my sweet-and-sour pork, she said something that really hit home: 'You're no better than them, Noah. Why can't you date a Jewish girl?'
"That night, I had a dream. I knew it had to be a dream, because there was no way Rachel could've climbed up the wall outside my window with no shoes on.

"When I woke up, I knew it was more than a dream. It was a sign from God. Rachel was a hot Jew, and the good Lord wanted me to get into her pants."

16. "Somebody to Love" (Episode 5)
I know it's bad that I'm saying this, but I like this better than the original.

15. "On My Own" (Episode 1)
The auditions are funny unto themselves, but Rachel's vignette during her song goes smoothly from hilarious to heartbreaking in just two minutes. (Yes, I'm aware the video is backwards. The comments read "If I were your parents, I'd sell you back," "I'm going to scratch out my eyes," and "Please get sterilized.")

14. Kurt talks to his father about why he blew his solo (Episode 9)
My mom loves this scene. It's so simple, yet so profound. And it's great that Kurt's "masculine" father truly cares for his son, and vice versa.

13. "Jump" (Episode 12)
Just look at the choreography.

12. "Maybe This Time" (Episode 5)
A Kristin Chenoweth-Lea Michele duet? SOLD!

11. "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going (Episode 13)
Mercedes can play Effie in Dreamgirls any day with that voice.

10. "Keep Holding On" (Episode 7)
With Quinn's pregnancy revealed to the entire school, she knows she's fucked. Literally. Her acting in this beautiful number is spot on.

9. Kurt comes out to his father (Episode 4)
"…I'm gay."
"I know."
"Really?"
"I've known since you were three. All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels. I can't say I'm in love with the idea. But if that's who you are, there's nothing I can do to change it. And I love you just the same."
[They hug.]
"Thanks for telling me, Kurt."

8. Quinn's parents disown her (Episode 10)
All four actors are perfect in this scene.

7. "Defying Gravity" (Episode 9)
Lea Michele's singing is perfect (and her Idina Menzel cheekbones don't hurt). You can just feel how much Kurt wants the solo, and also how conflicted he is.

6. Sue visits a nursing home (Episode 9)
Sue's a cold, deliciously nefarious harpy, but this one scene changes her character entirely.

5. Will and Terri's fight (Episode 12)
Oh my god.

4. "Imagine" (Episode 11)
This number is just so beautiful.

3. "Don't Rain on My Parade"/"You Can't Always Get What You Want" (Episode 13)
Everything is working in this scene: the vocals, the energy, and Will's reactions on the phone.

2. "My Life Would Suck Without You" (Episode 13)
A perfect final number for the fall finale.

1. "Don't Stop Believin'" (Episode 1)
If my students ever did this, I would cry hysterically.

With the announcement of the Oscar nominees the other day, I felt the need to make a list of what were (in my opinion) the thirteen best films of the '00's. I forget whether or not I've posted this already, but here we go:
  • American Beauty
  • Atonement
  • Brokeback Mountain
  • Crash
  • El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
  • Das Leben Der Anderen (The Lives of Others)
  • The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King
  • Million Dollar Baby
  • Moulin Rouge!
  • The Pianist
  • Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
  • Revolutionary Road
  • The Secret Life of Bees
As far as the Oscars go, I'm excited. But I'm not satisfied about a lot of things, such as the omission of (500) Days of Summer from the Best Picture category. Other people are too.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is up in the air. Let's hope that it's repealed.

Jon Stewart appeared on The O'Reilly Factor this week. In homage, holytaco.com prepared a list of the nine greatest Jon Stewart ownages.
This week has been killer. On top of my regular classes, I had daily rehearsals for a short one-act that went up on Wednesday, an extra (now weekly) lab session for my drafting and draping class, and 6:15 AM crew practices five days per week. I'm tired, but I'm alive. A DESCRIPTION!!
ROWING. I hate how early the fucking practices are, but afterwards I feel rather energized. I like the people on the team, and the men's team especially is really cool. I now have to go to bed at 9:30, but I'm dealing.
SOURCES. It can be boring at times, but our teacher's really, really nice, and I'm beginning to get used to her. Within the next month, we have two projects: an essay (in which we focus on a play or musical and analyze critical reviews of productions worldwide) and a team project (for which we have to write, direct, and act in a short play in an assigned style). For the first, I've chosen Hair and for the second, my group is doing expressionism. I'm excited.
EDUCATION. My teacher (who's also my correlate advisor) loves teaching the class, and thus, I love taking it. We do a lot of hands-on and discussion group activities, and I'm finding it very effective. We've done the "walk-around-and-stand-in-the-'strongly-agree'-'agree'-'disagree'-and-'strongly-disagree'-corners" activity, we've walked around the classroom and applied quotes from the previous night's reading to artwork by minority artists, we've commented on photographs, and we've had a series of small group discussions. I've learned so much!
SPANISH.
PSYCH. I. LOVE. THIS. CLASS. My teacher is a goddess.
STAGECRAFT. This class is so much fun. My teachers are both great and gracious and warm and funny and welcoming, and we're learning how to cut wood with drills, hang lights, direct, give cues, and other stuff. The class requires an extra twelve hours this semester working as a crew member on a drama department show, but I don't mind; I'm excited.
DRAFTING & DRAPING. The first day, I was freaking out because I had no fucking idea what the hell my teacher was talking about, but I've learned so far how to take measurements, make a draft, and cut parts of outfits out of muslin. It's a lot of challenging work (especially now with the two-hour-long Wednesday lab), but fun in a weird way.

On a side note, I'm reapplying to be a student fellow (our version of an R.A.). I really hope I get it.
