Who can explain anyone's sense of humor. I have a sister who was a victim of physical abuse. It's about the most unfunny subject to me and I do have a warped sense of humor. The funniest costume I've ever seen was a guy covered in bandages with an airline seat strapped to him. He went as Patsy Cline in an airline crash! I couldn't help laughing though I questioned the taste level.

Keith Olberman, who has a half-hour show on ESPN, led off his broadcast on (either Monday or Tuesday) on this very topic - savagely ripping a new one for any and all people who are doing this.

Unfortunately, he also showed some pictures (a half-dozen or so).

Since one of the points he emphasized was "Just imagine how seeing these things makes the victim feel, both having to re-live it over and over again as well as seeing all these people who think it's funny", it seems to me that he became a part of the problem by giving these people national exposure on TV. Sure, it may make a more compelling case that "These idiots really do exist" but it also ran the victim through the ringer yet again in a very public way.

And frankly, it may get more people TO try it than it convinces people NOT to try it.

I think it's supposed to be "edgy", like jokes made after a disaster. But the jokes made after a disaster usually have to be funny. I don't see the humor value here.
