I really held out against getting cable internet for a while, because speeds weren't guaranteed, and also because Comcast has such a fucking horrible reputation

I've had comcast for 5 months now, and the speeds have remained good. I haven't tested regularly, but my impression is that it's always far faster than my DSL ever was.
The two annoyances so far are: 1) BitTorrent upload blocking (via Sandvine). Not much of an issue in practice, just annoying in principle. 2) DNS redirection. I opted out, which means I use a different pool of DNS servers and don't get redirected. Which is great, except that this alternate pool seems to be really flaky. It's quite frequent that it will return failed lookups, and I have to retry a couple times before I get a valid result.
There are some decent DNS servers that are public (errr... publicly accessible).
Try 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (Verizon).
Telco monopoly DNS service here is terrible, I always have to use other DNS servers.
There are also some DNS service providers; I tried OpenDNS, but they have catch-all redirection (which totally screws up intranet name resolution, among other things).
