Yes. Every belt up to black has a written essay component for the adults, teens, children and 'Little Dragons' (5-8 yr olds.)

Katana (and indeed sword in general) is a blackbelt level weapon in my art. I have hand to test with nunchukau, tonfa, and fighting sticks though. Psis (sp) are next.
