Prologue
With this gift from god, we swear to protect, to defend and to sacrifice.
Lead us not into temptation, but to redeem those who have fallen to the Shadows.
The sun slowly dipped beneath the horizon, turning the sky a shade crimson red. Cries of fear and desperation flooded the streets as the young servant ran, scrambling through the piles of rubble. The distant sounds of battle were getting closer and he knew they didn’t have much time. He ignored the blistering pain in his feet and continued forward.
“Sire, you have to leave.”
He yelled as soon as he had burst into the old abandoned chapel. He had hid his master here in an attempt to keep him safe, but danger was quickly approaching. His heart dropped past the floor when he saw nothing but a pool of swirling blood at his feet. A sense of dread settled in his stomach as his sharp eyes roamed around the room, searching for any sign of movement.
“Leeteuk?”
A figure emerged from the darkness and the servant instantly sighed with relief. Without another word, he made his way over to the other man and grabbed his arm.
“They’re coming for you. You have to go!”
“No.” Defiance flashed in his eyes as the taller man tugged his arm out of his grasp. “I can fight them. I can defend myself.”
“Please, sire.” Leeteuk’s pleading eyes bore into the other’s silver orbs. “This is the only way to protect the Energy.”
“You are assuming that I will die.”
The servant hesitated, nervously casting a glance at the closed door. He didn’t want to offend his master but this wasn’t the time to argue over something as trivial as pride. No matter how strong one was, there was power in numbers. One to a hundred thousand was not a chance they should take.
“An escape was ordered directly by the Committee and we cannot defy them! The others have already gone.”
“Then let them go.” The older man waved his hand in the air dismissively. “We are the cause of this war. We should end it. I am not abandoning the world that created me.”
“But if this magic falls into the hands of-”
“It will not.” His master interrupted curtly, turning towards Leeteuk with a solemn expression on his face. “Because my Energy will be with you.”
Before Leeteuk could ask what he meant, a sphere of shimmering light appeared in the palm of his master’s hand. The servant watched in amazement as it danced in the air weightlessly, glowing a brilliant sapphire blue. A series of ancient words were muttered and it flickered, once, twice, then darted out towards Leeteuk.
The servant gasped as a burning sensation spread through his body. His hands clenched into fists, his eyes squeezed shut. But the moment soon passed and he was left with a tingling feeling in his fingers. It was strange, yet oddly calming.
“You are the new Guardian, Leeteuk.”
The young boy didn’t even begin to understand the words when the heavy wooden doors slammed open. Both of them jumped, loud shouts signalling that they have been found. Leeteuk looked at his master in panic. It was too late. They had lost.
“I guess it’s my turn to say ‘you have to leave’.”
Confusion swam in his mind as the older man smiled back at him. He seemed weaker, frailer than before, but there was a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Try as they might, they will never find you.”
And with a snap of his fingers, Leeteuk was gone.
