Susan Boyle is not that amazing of a singer. She has good pitch, yes. She's got alright emotion, sure. But the only reason you're really so insistant on her being AMG BLEW ME AWAY is because she's not pretty. Her talent is only slightly above average.

The shallowness of our culture, even subconsciously, really irks me sometimes -_-

Exactly. /facepalm And the thing that gets me is that people aren't even aware they're doing it, convincing themselves that she's that amazing because it makes them feel good to stick up for the underdog when really she's not that much above average.

I see where you're coming from, Ris. I think for a lot of people that's the case and as you say, they don't know it. I know deep down I love rooting for the underdog because that's what excites me in competitions. The idea of someone outside of the social norm conquering the socially acceptable is admittedly a very pleasing thought. But then there are also people who just don't accept anything out of their comfort level (ie the socially accepted) and in a similar manner, don't realize it. So it definitely can play both ways. I think a lot of people think of themselves as above that pattern of thought but in reality aren't

This is also the reason why I don't want American Idol...or any of those shows.
