I'm the first to admit my knowledge/understanding of the American 1920s is sub-par. If you spot anything that's historically or culturally inaccurate, please point it out and I'll change it immediately. o7

Hua Mulan and her twin brother, Mushu, are the children of second-generation immigrants into Somarium. They grew up in moderate conditions, respected among the Chinese community though not particularly affluent as a whole. Raised side by side with her brother, Mulan had many freedoms that most young girls in her community were not-- freedoms that later on her parents would regret allowing.

As she grew closer to adulthood, Mulan continued her (relatively) wild behaviour: cutting her own hair when her parents told her to grow it, skipping out on chores and womanly duties to play in the streets with her brother and his friends. At the age of sixteen her parents took her to meet another Chinese family with a son her age, and Mulan knew that dutifully staying home, doing chores, and marrying someone practically a stranger (kind though he might be) was not at all something she wanted to do.

At eighteen, Mushu was called for consignment into the army. Mulan immediately protested and told him he couldn't join: his dexterity and mobility were weak, he was underweight, and, though his personality was exuberant, he didn't have any stomach for fighting. Mulan refused to let her brother walk into what she saw as a death trap, and Mushu wanted to help his sister escape a life he knew she found dull and boring; so, though a little reluctantly, he agreed to help get her into the army under his name.

Mulan kept up her brother's persona all through her training. Though she was naturally weaker than the men in her unit, she had stamina and aim, and she didn't fall behind. Eventually she graduated from training and was sent into duty. It wasn't long before things ended, however. In one of her first skirmishes, Mulan took a bullet in the side for her commanding officer. She was rushed to the first aid tent, where doctors removed her shirt and discovered her bound breasts.

For identity fraud and dishonesty, Mulan was banished from the military. Too ashamed to return home, where her family and community would have heard how she'd brought dishonour to her family name, she sought out a group of which she'd heard during her time in the military: the Vongola Protection Agency. She offered her services in exchange for something to do that would still make her feel worth something, like she wasn't useless. The then-head of the group accepted her with open arms.

It wasn't long afterwards that he was killed and the group taken over by his son, Tsuna. Mulan felt great loyalty towards Tsuna's family and agreed to continue working for him without hesitation. She continues to make her life's mission to rid Somarium of violence and crime.
