hitsugi ficlet for goji

soukoji asked for a cute Hitsugi fic, hence this bit of silliness.

"Stumpy Guitarstring", one-shot, humor, implied RuHi (but mostly there's a cat).

"That one."

"...Are you sure, sir?"

"Yes!" Hitsugi pointed emphatically, grinning from ear to ear. What he was pointing at hissed equally as emphatically from behind thin metal bars and melted farther back into the shadows of the stacked cages. Next to him the animal shelter volunteer eyed the mottled, overweight cat with uncertainty, loathe to reach his hands into the beast's lair. "He's so cute...big and squishy like a pillow, don't you think?"

"Yessir." Defeated, the volunteer reached for a pair of gardening gloves near the cages (convenient for problem animals) and pulled them on, hesitantly clicking open the wire door. Almost immediately, the cat threw a terrible fit, but after a short battle the harassed volunteer extracted the tubby tabby. Hitsugi continued to smile happily, taking in his new pet's stumpy legs, overly wide eyes, crooked ears, and too-short tail.

"He'll calm down once I get him home, ne? He just doesn't like being cooped up in that cage, do you, kitty?" Scooping up kitty in the pet carrier, Hitsugi addressed the last bit directly to the cat, who spat at him in return. "I hope he gets along with my other cats...."

"Yessir."

"Ah, thank you. I'll take him home now." With a small wave and a huge smile, Hitsugi hoisted the pet carrier on his hip and left the shelter.

Two days passed and Hitsugi had not once seen his new cat outside of the space beneath his bed. The fat animal had immediately slunk away hissing upon being set loose in the apartment, thick legs moving in a swift beeline for the bedroom as if the cat had turned vampiric to the daylight. Twice that night Hitsugi had tried to coax kitty out of his cave with promises of treats and affection, but the effort only got him a nasty gash on the hand.

Now, Hitsugi was sitting glumly at his kitchen table, poking at the reheated dinner he had just pulled out of the microwave. What could be wrong with the new cat? he thought, mentally ticking off possibilities. Before coming to any conclusion, the phone rang, blinking Sakito's number in the Caller ID. Sighing, Hitsugi answered, setting his chopsticks down on the uneaten bowl. "Hi..."

"How's the new cat? Still lurking under your bed?"

"Yeah...I can't get him to come out! I've tried everything, but he just keeps running away from me. I'm afraid he might be sick or something." Hitsugi pouted into the phone, even though his friend couldn't see him. "I wanna take him to the vet, but I can't catch him. Will you come over and help me?"

"What? Why isn't that lug Ruka helping you?"

"He doesn't get along with animals. Besides, he's asleep on the couch and you know how hard it is to wake him up. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease?" Hitsugi begged hopefully, absently playing with one of his lips rings.

"...Fiiine. It's your fault if I get rabies, though."

"My cat doesn't have rabies!"

"I was referring to Ru."

Thirty minutes later, Sakito stood with Hitsugi next to the bed, both staring at it like they expected it to open up a gate to hell. The cat was growling menacingly at their toes, although his body was still completely hidden in the depths of the bed-cave. "Now I know what the guy at the shelter was talking about," Hitsugi broke the silence in hushed tones, afraid of angering the beast any more than it already was. Cautiously, he knelt down and peered underneath, swallowing nervously and pulling Sakito down with him. The two guitarists stayed crouched at the edge of the abyss and waited for their eyes to adjust to the lack of light. In the darkness, two greenish orbs flickered evilly, as the cat's eyes reflected what little light reached that far back.

"...You need an exorcist for this one, not an extra pair of hands..." Sakito replied, glancing over dubiously at his friend.

Smiling sheepishly, Hitsugi reached for the pillowcase he had set on the floor to receive the devil cat when they caught it. He whispered, "Okay, you grab him and I'll hold the sack."

"Why do I have to grab him? I rather like having hands."

"Because my arms don't reach that far! He won't eat you, honest!"

Casting the Hitsugi a 'you owe me big' glare, Sakito steeled himself and reached slowly under the bed. Hitsugi watched with mild amusement as Sakito's look of triumph turned into one of horror and the taller man swore loudly before scuttling backward away from the bed, leaving the cat sputtering underneath.

"You must have scared him. He's just not used to you yet," Hitsugi's chuckle turned into a worried frown. How was he ever going to help his cat if it wouldn't let anyone get close enough? Sighing, he pushed himself up and offered Sakito a hand. "Let's take a break and think of something else."

The afternoon drifted by lazily, but Hitsugi still hadn't come up with any plan to get his hands on the cat. They had made three more attempts, even trying to move the bed, but all endeavours just ended in battered hands. Hitsugi watched his friend yawn from a dining room chair and eye the slumbering Ruka suspiciously. With a quiet chuckle, he responded, "He sleeps a lot."

"But why does he have to take up the entire couch?"

Hitsugi shrugged, dropping down in a chair beside Sakito. Almost out of habit, he picked up a guitar leaning against the wall and fiddled with the tuning, feeling quite put out by this whole cat ordeal and he had no idea what to do. He began plucking out a listless tune on the guitar, hoping perhaps a little music would help him think.

He finally had a good tune going when Sakito nudged him in the ribs with an elbow. "'Sugi...look." Following the the finger aimed toward the hall to his bedroom, Hitsugi's mouth dropped open in surprise as he noticed a familiar mottled face peeking around the corner curiously. The cat hesitated, seeming to have a sudden change of heart, and Hitsugi put his hand down slowly from the guitar, accidentally brushing the strings. At the slightly vibration from the instrument, kitty's ears perked forward and he stayed where he was instead of beating a hasty retreat.

"I think he likes guitar..." Hitsugi whispered to Sakito, not taking his gaze from the fat ball of fur. Strumming experimentally, he found his assumption to be correct as the cat trotted forward waving its stumpy tail. Almost giggling with delight and relief, Hitsugi resumed playing the instrument, feeling the cat's soft head butt up against his leg affectionately. He played for a minute more, then reached down and picked up the cat with no damage at all. In fact, it was purring rather roughly and gazing at him with half-lidded eyes.

"He purrs like a chainsaw," Sakito laughed from the other chair. "Maybe you should name him Rupon."

An answered grunt drifted over from the couch, and Hitsugi laughed as well, hugging the chunky cat with a pleased grin. "He is a lot like Ru...but I think I'll name him Stumpy. Stumpy Guitarstring."

The end.

Yay for lame cat names? XD Hope you like it, hun~ ♥ ♥ ♥
