Friday night
qarylla and I went to
jikharra's and
keshwyn's for an unusual weekend game night. qarylla was engrossed in a game of Hand and Foot by the time I showed up, so I headed to the back room with
meranthi and the Oddball Artist and played Iron Dragon. For those unfamiliar, you build rails (with crayon!) and deliver things to eventually rule the world or something. Anyway, I hadn't played for four years or so, and got a edose of beginner's luck - things like "three different cities will pay a king's ransom for fur, which you can get this turn" - though I think was the only one who lost turns to warlords and vampires and such. So I spent most of the game apologizing for my bounty. Eventually I ended a turn one space from winning; only a disaster could stop me from winning. The next turn, I moved and turned in my final contract. Victory!
Or not. meranthi and OA told me that I needed to draw a new contract before I won (apparently at the very instant my goods are delivered, someone else offers me new work). Fine; the only thing that can stop me is a flood destroying my track, and only 2 of the 3 in the deck of 90 or so cards would affect me anyway. Guess what I drew? And while I was lamenting the fact that I had to wait another two turns to win, OA counted her cash and said, oh, wait, I will win next turn unless a disaster stops me. So i lost in a fairly excruciating matter by someone who spent the entire game complaining about being too far behind. Yay.
Saturday qarylla,
autumnesquirrel and I trundled off to North Dighton for an un-birthday party for Mrs. Wally the AI (hers is December 26, which of course never gets celebrated properly). meranthi and
thastygliax brought the kids, so a lot of time was spent making sure they only touched the knickknacks that they couldn't break or hurt themselves with (if there's a my tooth-shaped dent in the magnifying glass, you'll know why). qarylla made super-chocolate ice cream, which went well with the parents' super-chocolate cake. It was a bit damp, so none of the theoretical lawn sports ever took place, but there was Apples to Apples and lots of amiable chatting.
Yesterday was
crow112101's and qarylla's birthday party. Joining the festivites were
georgy,
j1m_future,
airuvande,
infernogirl,
mr_q_o_p,
queenofpink77,
psykira,
dm_bashir,
middle_sis and Little Brother. We wen to Houghton's Pond, where we were able to snag a table with a grill near many large rocks (one of which got tageed by some state park gang). We played much Wiffle Ball (I beaned j1m_future on request) and a little bit of bocce and monkey in the middle (football style), and many of us also swam/waded,stood avgtuely near the lake. crow112101 grilled up tasty foods, and qarylla contributed cupcaked (birthday people shouldn't have to do cooking!). Presents and s'mores also featured prominently. middle_sis got herself lost, but that was the only major disaster (two straight exposures to sunlight and fresh air without injury or turning to ash, woohoo) and generally the barbeque went off better than I had hoped. Pictures will be posted as soon as I get around to it.
After everyone left, qarylla and I watched "The Fifth Element" (earth, air, water, fire and heart cheese love) and headed to bed early, though I was too hot to sleep very well.
