this isn't as well as wanted it to be but it's something. i'll revisit this prompt later

----

He hadn't seen them in a brightly lit room before. He only ever really saw them at night, when the light was dim. And even then, he would barely see them. He couldn't see tiny details like that anyway, not really well.

He didn't know what to say. They didn't seem to be in pain from them. But they were pink, so they must have been recent... right?

That's what worried him the most.

Who could have done that to them? The war wasn't going on anymore so there would be no reason for monsters to harm humans.

"Papyrus?" Their voice broke his thoughts. They looked at him with a slightly worried expression. "... are you okay? You just kind of... blanked out for a minute there." They let out an awkward laugh as they gripped their shirt. Papyrus was almost at a loss for words. He could see their worried expression but he couldn't stop looking.

"... HOW RECENT ARE THOSE?" His voice was quiet, moving a little closer. He wanted to reach out, but he stopped himself. Their small smile slowly faded. He didn't even have to elaborate on what he was talking about.

They knew what he was talking about.

"... u-uh... n-not very." They actually couldn't remember when they last did it. It was a few months ago now. "... wh-"

"WHO DID IT TO YOU?" His voice becoming more worried.

"Please, I don't-" Their voice cut off as they felt the cool touch of Papyrus' finger tips on their arm. They fought the urge to pull away. They knew he was being genuine. "... c-can you turn off the lights?" They asked, keeping their gaze at his hands as they slowly moved away.

He got up from the bed and over the light, flicking it off quickly. A small wave of relief washed over them. But Papyrus still felt worried. He quietly walked back over to the bed as they situated themself to the side closest to the wall.  He looked down at them, seeing their gaze purposely avoiding him.

Did he say something wrong?

He lifted the blanket and slipped into the bed. He let out a soft sigh before working up the courage to say something.
"... I'M S-"

"Papyrus... is it your first time seeing them?" They said, their voice quiet. They still weren't looking at him, even though they were facing him. He didn't know what to say. It seemed like a weird question to him.

"YES... WELL... AT LEAST, I THINK SO." He replied, slightly pushing himself up to lay on his side. He rested his chin on his hand. "... I'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO SEE VERY WELL." He kept his gaze on them, watching them intently. They bit their lip before letting out a quick breath.

"... n... no one did it to me." They narrowed their eyes, noticing the soft orange glow emanating from him. Papyrus tilted his head. "... I did it..." Their voice trailed off, letting out a soft sigh before tightly closing their eyes. This wasn't something they wanted to talk about.
But part of them did.

"... YOU DID IT?"

"... to myself."

"!!! WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?!" His voice grew more worried. They slightly flinched at the sudden reply.

"I don't... know. It was just a way to cope with my feelings."

"... I... I DON'T UNDERSTAND." He heard them make a short sigh, as if slightly frustrated. They didn't meant it that way.

"... there are times where... I have felt the need to destroy myself. Though, it hasn't gotten to that point in a long time." They narrowly opened their eyes. "But when these feelings do come... I can't handle... it?" A small laugh came from their throat. "So... I take it out like this... to like... numb myself from it. Even for just a little bit. I know it's not right, but... it's almost like an addiction now." They felt tears trying to escape but they held them back as best as they could, forcing a small laugh once more. "There have been... dozens of times where I couldn't do anything about it. And I'd just tell myself 'oh, I'll only do it once... one more time... one more time... one more...' over and over. I'd blank out, the pain finally dulling my senses."

Papyrus slowly laid back down fully, keeping his gaze on them. His mind was almost racing. He couldn't even hear them talking anymore. His eyes focused on their hand as their fingers traced over the scars.

"It was never enough... I always wanted to do more, but... I already regretted even doing it... I don't like talking about it. I don't like letting others see... since it makes them feel bad. Like it's their fault I did it, when it wasn't! I just... can't deal with how I am... so I... take it out on myself-"

Their words were cut short as they felt him brush their hand aside and lightly touched where the scars. Their eyes widened at the sensation. It was cold, but soothing. They instinctively jerked away.

"Pap, nn..." They stopped themself from saying no. They knew he takes it literally. He let out a soft sigh.

"... I STILL... WHY... DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT NOW? ARE YOU IN PAIN??" He was trying.

"N-no, I don't feel like that now... I haven't in a little while. I don't... I'm sorry you had to see them. I didn't mean to upset you... can we just-" They felt his light touch gripping their arm again. Forcing themself not to pull away, they finally looked at him.

Before they could say anymore, they watched Papyrus lightly press his teeth against the scars. Their face began to burn.
"P-Pap- what-"

The dim orange light emanating from his eyes slowly faded away as he gently wrapped his arm around them, pulling them closer.

"... YOU KNOW I'LL BE THERE IF YOU EVER FEEL LIKE THAT AGAIN..."

As he pulled them closer, he took hold of their arm. His eyes squinting as he looked over the scars. He could see how faded most of them were, but others were still fairly pink. He then gently placed his teeth over them, as if he was kissing them. The sudden sensation caused them to squeak a noise.

"A-ah?! P-Papyrus, what-"

"I READ IN A HUMAN BOOK THAT KISSES CAN HELP MAKE OTHERS FEEL BETTER IF THEY'VE HURT THEMSELVES." His voice was as soft as it could be. Their face began to burn with embarrassment.

He suddenlt felt them shaking as they huddled closer.
"OH, NO! DID THAT NOT WORK?" The worry in his voice came back, the glow in his eyes getting brighter as he gently patted their back. He soon heard soft laughing. "HUH?"

"... hehe... no, Papyrus... it worked... perfectly."
