Depleting it, rather than adding to it, I suspect.

I am not sure how it all happened, one minute I was on holiday, then suddenly I discovered I was employed again. I honestly can't remember anything I did to provoke this, apart from being my normal polite self to people when they phoned up and asked me things.

I just think his friend couldn't stand to sit by and watch him do nothing but sunbathe and buy gadgets while he had to work so he offered him a job.
