My approach has always been to throw them out as soon as is legally possible, just in case.

No, my accountant told me the same thing yours did. But as an IT contractor I live in permanent fear of an IR35-related inspection from the Inland Revenue. Not that I'm breaking the rules, but reason, common sense or indeed the plain facts don't seem to stop them concluding that a large bill together with a fine is in order. The less historical information I can give them, the less they can hit more for. :)

The recession, though, is mitigating the problem. I've not had a contract for 3 months. Gizza a job...

True, I also found that not having a job solved a multitude of problems.

I am not sure you would be able to cope with the Windows-infested environment I have to operate in, as I recall you had strong feelings on the issue :)

Sad, I know, I did it!!! I came up in facebook and classmates.....no accolades! But.....found a younger Sharon Smuts, sent her a message just to see if she is related......Yeah right....however it is a very small family...globally speaking.....lets see what happens.....
