Recs Sought!

Jun 30, 2008 11:41

I'll be travelling a lot this summer, and I need to stock my ebook reader!  At the moment I have only seven books left to read in it, and I live in terror of running out (seriously, it's a phobia;  I've been known to INSIST on going book shopping because I only had a few hundred pages left and couldn't bear the prospect of running out).  So I ( Read more... )

Get all, I mean ALL of the Codex Alera books by Jim Butcher.

He's awesome personified.

LOVE HIS BOOKS!

Unfortunately, they don't look to be on ebook.com... is there another ebook store you use?

Unfortunately, my ebook is Sony and really strict about proprietary material. However, I might be able to find the Butcher through...*coughs* less orthodox channels, since he's been recced pretty enthusiastically by more than one person.

I'll see if I can give him a try!

You won't be sorry if you can get his books.... they're addictive, truly.

The Codex Alera books I think are some of the best fantasy books I think I've ever read and you wouldn't go wrong reading his Harry Dresden books either...

Harry is a Chicago private eye who is also a wizard. They're awesome. Think good mysteries with a fantasy twist.

He occasionally makes allusions in those books to Spider-man, so I think Butcher is a Marvel fan, but aside from that I think he's an okay guy....

LOL!

I think I've tracked down an ebook store that sells them in PDF format, so I'm probably good to go! *happy dance*

There's loads of good stuff in the recent book meme that's floating around; here's my list. The plus is most of the older books listed are on Project Gutenberg.

What I return to most are the classics written by Roald Dahl. I can't imagine going through summer without Charlie & The Chocolate Factory :D I couldn't find the ebook version, but there's plenty of good audiobooks available.

Speaking of which, BBC's Radio 4 recently had a programme on the music of the spheres, and I immediately thought of your lovely series. Here's the page. The comments posted are fascinating and sometimes a bit too scientific.

*looks at your list*

Oh, I want to re-read "The Grapes of Wrath"--I definitely recommend it (unless you read it and hate it, in which case I said nothing, lol).

Y'know, Sony's ebook has a deal that gives you like 100 "Great Classics" books for free. I bet there's a bunch on this list there. I'll have to look into it!

And oh gosh, thanks so much for that link! Awesome! I can't wait to listen to it...

*joins in insisting on Jim Butcher*

I love all his books. I'm a rabid fan of his Dresden Files and I've read them all multiple times.

I also recommend Lois McMaster Bujold; I adore her Vorkosigan Series.

Wow, a LOT of people I like and respect really like Butcher and I've barely heard of him. *hides face in shame* I'm definitely going hunting for him.

I've read one of McMaster's books and I really ought to get my hands on more of them. It's early in Miles's career and it was really complicated but very awesome...

Actually, Jim Butcher has a LJ.

He writes remarkably helpful essays on how he writes or starts to put a book together...

I recommend friending him.

He doesn't post in his journal often, but when he does it's usually enlightening.

Hmm, I don't know if these authors are available in the e-books, but I have all of Eddings books too, love them. So I thought I rec them. David Weber-Honor Harrington series. Robert Jordan -Wheel of time Series. Mercedes Lackey -Valdemar Books, three of her books have a slash hero. Magic's Price is one of the titles, Magic's Promise, Magic's Pawn. I cried. They are wonderful. Katherine Kurtz if you like historical bent. Alan dean Foster's Pip and Flinx novels. C.j. Cherryh-Chanur novels, though she has some other wonderful stuff. She has an eerie talent of creating real seeming alien species. It's real enough to make you mind hurt.
P.S. Thanks for the comments, and recs on my P bunny outline. As soon as I have something polished in electronic form I'll send you a copy. -Slvrbld747

The Vanyel series is a well-beloved one here. :) I was so thrilled to find a non-straight character! I haven't read a lot of Lackey's recent stuff, but I really should look into it...

You know, I think I read one Pip and Flinx book way back when! I know I really enjoyed his Spellsinger series a lot...

Thanks for the recs! *scribbles notes*

Seconding the Lackey, anything old she wrote *a lot of which you can buy for ebook on Baen's website same with the Honor Harrington books...Weber's fantasy series is pretty good as well. Ummm. Tanya Huff is good all around. If you want crack you'd go for her Summoning series. Summon the Keeper, Second Summoning, Long Hot Summoning. She's pretty slashy as well. Her partner's Fiona Patton and she has a few good books as well.

It's technically young adult books, but go for Tamora Pierce if you can. She's one of two authors on my list that I buy in hardback...she's only got two books that I didn't care for, out twenty plus.

Thought you might want to know it's the Smoke and Shadows series of Huff's that features a young, gay man in the television industry. I've reread that series many, many times.

I've only read a couple by Huff but I might need to correct that oversight. :) She's pretty awesome.

I love the older Lackey (Vanyel's books were wonderful eye-openers for me) but I haven't read so much recently.

I read one long book by Huff, "The Fire Stone" and it was awesome. Thanks for the reminder, I definitely have to look into more of hers.

And I've heard really good things about Tamora Pierce as well! *jots down names* Thanks so much, this should be a nice summer for reading. :)
