Recs Sought!

Jun 30, 2008 11:41

I'll be travelling a lot this summer, and I need to stock my ebook reader!  At the moment I have only seven books left to read in it, and I live in terror of running out (seriously, it's a phobia;  I've been known to INSIST on going book shopping because I only had a few hundred pages left and couldn't bear the prospect of running out).  So I ( Read more... )

How about some Octavia Butler? I just read her Xenogenesis trilogy and it knocked me out. It's about the aftermath of the end of the world, and what happens to the human race when an alien race comes to continue our species by mixing it with their own. (I think they may have renamed the trilogy Lilith's Brood, so if you're interested, check for that name as well.)

I read that way back in college! It does a really great job with exploring the mixing with an alien race without being overly-romantic or at all xenophobic. I remember the gender issues as being particularly well-thought out. It was really cool...

Favourite author of all time is Lynn Flewelling.

Recently, she just released the fourth book of her Fantasy series, Nightrunners, just last week and the two main characters are male and in a relationship with each other.

I also recommend for just the sheer beloved psychology and thought-provoking plot of her Tamir Trilogy which is about a girl, who is literally raised in her brother's body in order for her to be protected long enough to live so she can become Queen.

Tamir Trilogy could be seen as a prequel to NightRunners but it's a century or so before the latter takes place enough though Tamir was written after the third book of NR was finished.

NightRunners Series
Luck in the Shadows
Stalking Darkness (Favourite book of them all)
Traitor's Moon
Shadows Return

Tamir Trilogy
Bone Doll's Twin
Hidden Warrior
The Oracle's Queen

Right now she's also working on the fifth book that is to be released summer of next year. =)

Oh and I so recommend The Green Rider series as mentioned above by Kirstin Britain. There's actually a third ( ... )

The fourth book of Nightrunners is out?? *excited noises* I did not know that. Wonderful trilogy and I remember really wanting to see more since the relationship was finally getting off the ground; I'll look into that without a doubt. And the Tamir I'd heard about, I'll have to check it out as well. Thank you!

Oooh, this sounds like a slightly different take on, I think it's called "Blink," which is about snap judgments and how they tend to be pretty accurate. Interesting. *takes notes* Thanks!

Hope I'm not too late but I recently read The Time-Traveler's Wife and thought of you while I was reading it! Mostly because of the time-traveling and um ... epic romance. :p It's kind of like science-fiction ... I guess? Well, I couldn't put it down. No idea if it's availible via e-book though. :/

Oh, I'll definitely go looking for it then! I'm a sucker for time-travel stories, obviously. :)

You've probably already read some of his books, but Terry Pratchett is my absolute favorite author! Careful, though, his novels may cause random outbreaks of laughter that may cause embarrassment in public areas. <3 His discworld novels are the best.

I read one Discworld book ages ago and rather liked it, but I think my sense of humor might have developed more since then as well. :) At least I hope so...
