"The Dark Night of the Soul"

Jul 29, 2008 22:06

My friend-of-a-friend (technically friend-of-my-sister) who's starting to get into slash and made that Star Trek tribute video went to see TDK last night and said she was amazed by it:  "This film does not back off from darkness and hurt, from saying, 'It really is as bad as you think.' The only comfort it offers is an antihero who can take it, on ( Read more... )

...would I be a party pooper if I mentioned it's by St. Joan of the Cross? ..no slash, sadness! ..unless it was femslash, which I wouldn't really doubt :P Sor Juana has gorgeous poetry -and she was totally kickass!-, though I had never read this one in particular! it's a beautiful poem! I find her love poems written to God especially compelling -she didn't shy away from the love that flesh is capable of offering, and yet her offer was... to a spiritual being. Probably what makes them age so well, too, since one can always relate to the elation of a secret love... which is odd, since I guess spirituality changes more often than our reactions when in love... though, I guess, like you say, as long as it's the one we long for, we can relate, no matter what kind of one is! You know what, I can't tell the love poem from the worship poems at all. I suck at this! thus, I shall just say I like the poem, and to hell with what it was meant to be, lol (I got myself intrigued about her life, and am reading her biography, and all I thought I knew ( ... )

I agree! That's part of what I love about it...I really adore the very passionate female hermits and mystics who clearly, well, lusted after God, body and soul. It's very, very intense and intimate.

It´s odd how a poem changes it´s feeling when its traslated. English version is beautiful but something is mising and something new is there, I don´t know if its just the gender, I can´t put my finger on it...

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a talented writer, talented in a world dominated by men, her only choice was the church if she wanted to be something more than a wife. A lot of people think of her as the first feminist in Latinamerica. Other think of her a lesbian writer, I don´t know, sensibility was differente in the 17th century. But her poems still have beauty and meaning even if time changes our POV about them... like about everything I suppose^^;

I recommend you to wath "YO, LA PEOR DE TODAS", is an argentinian movie from the 90´s about her life(a bit of english info here=> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100990/)

Go to watch TDK, please!!!! I want to confirm my idea about Nolan movie´s theme!!

Isn't it? I'm almost fluent enough in Japanese to understand some poetry and it's fascinating to see how something indefinable disappears and something else equally undefinable appears...

The writer is awesome! I've learned a lot more about her now and wow, she was so cool. The movie sounds like it ends sadly... :(

We're finally making it to the movie Saturday! Couldn't make it any sooner without leaving the country (which I contemplated...) I'm looking forward to seeing what you thought of it in more detail!
