OK, so I got this wonderful nice new computer and am trying to transfer the files from the old computer to the new one. Now, I can't do this by CD. The CD drive on the old machine is broken. I got a network cable and hooked them up to each other, figuring I could just directly transfer the files across the cable. But its not working. It keeps ( Read more... )

Are you using the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard"? It's pretty useful (I only discovered it lately). (It doesn't help your problem, but may simplify transferring data.)

Well, the first thing to think about with the network cable is: is it a crossover cable? Two of the pairs of wire are interchanged if they are. If it's not, I don't suppose you have a spare hub and network cable? That would work instead of a crossover cable. Some network cards autosense the cable type and switch if they need the other. But since you're getting an error, they probably aren't switching. I think a crossover cable will fix that, at least. It should be something they sell at Best Buy - though the monkeys might not be aware of it.

I have a crossover cable I can give you on Friday, if you like. Altenatively, you could borrow somebody's external hard drive and copy files to drive/move drive to other computer/copy files off drive. I don't have one for PC at the moment, but I do have a 512Mb USB memory stick you could borrow for the weekend if you're feeling patient or don't have too much to move.

If I could borrow that cable, I'd appreciate it. But am I seeing you on Friday? I wasn't planning on coming to the game.

I figured, but I'm willing to drop it off if you need it. Or (if I'm pressed for time) you could swing by campus and pick it up...
