[Rodney]

Even when she'd been younger, Jill had never been much of a date person. She'd dated, of course, but it had always seemed easier not to define things and, even when things had been defined, dating had all but ceased. So it was a little strange that she and Rodney were halfway through what passed for a date on the island. Strange, but not bad ( Read more... )

Rodney was about as good at dating as he was at scuba diving. Coincidentally, he often felt as if he was drowning in the whole small-talk, eye-contact, flowers and wine and candlelight thing without having the faintest idea what to do if his oxygen tank blew up. Which happened frequently, on Rodney McKay's dates ( ... )

They'd been together long enough that she knew that wasn't strictly true. She'd been with him on Atlantis for that brief period, anyway, and she remembered the incident with a woman named Katie and how awkward and kind of awful she'd felt for several hours after. But if he didn't want to talk about it, she wasn't going to press it. Not when things felt nice and easy.

"Well, there couldn't have been much to do. Fighting aliens aside," she added as an afterthought. "I'm not sure that's one of the better date activities, though."

The wraith could stay far, far away from any date she was on and that would make her very happy.

"No, the alien-fighting wasn't very romantic," Rodney agreed. "It was pretty time-consuming, actually. I practically had to run the city myself." This was exaggerating a little, but it wasn't like Jill was going to run into Carter or Weir and...oh wait. "The scientific aspect of it, anyway. Maintaining power systems, sorting through the Ancient database, that kind of thing, took up a lot of my time. There wasn't much else for...you know." He shrugged.

"Sometimes I miss being so busy." He looked at her. "Other times, not so much." Like now.

"I know what you mean," she agree, still looking at the setting sun. She could feel Rodney looking at her, though, and she smiled, thinking of how different her life had been back home. "It seemed like I didn't even have time to sleep before the island."

She didn't sleep much more now, but at least the opportunity was there.

"It's what I was used to, though, and even now it still seems weird not to have it," she continued, looking over at him finally. "But it's nice, too."
