[for Sam]

Jill was doing her very best not to count the weeks, but it was difficult and, even now, as she debated brewing coffee, she was aware of the time that was passing. She was painfully aware of the fact that she was five weeks along now, give or take a few days. It wasn't even that far into the pregnancy. Barely anything, really, and at this point she ( Read more... )

Ever since she'd given McKay a metaphorical kick in the pants where Jill was concerned, Sam wanted to go and make sure Jill was okay, see if she was handling things. It wasn't that she thought Jill was some kind of wimp, but with McKay being an ass about the situation, Sam just wanted to offer a friendly shoulder if it was needed, without seeming like she was butting in to something that wasn't her business.

So when she saw Jill in the kitchen, she was glad she had a good excuse to talk to her instead of showing up on her doorstep like some kind of busybody. "Hey," she said, poking in the cabinets for a coffee mug. "How's it going?"

She failed at casual about as much as Rodney did.

After spending so much time around Rodney, Jill recognized the failure to be casual when something else was actually on his mind and she froze in the middle of brewing the coffee. Sam had sounded... not the same, really, but similar. Which meant that Rodney had told her. That was the only explanation.

Or Jill was being ridiculously paranoid and sensitive, which was just as possible.

"Not bad," she admitted, leaving the coffee alone for the time being. She doubted it was healthy anyway. "You know, island life. How are things with you?"

Sam shrugged. "Oh, they're just... you know. The usual. Same old island stuff." She found a mug (and wiped it out, because you never really knew who was doing the dishes here) and set it on the counter, then leaned against the counter and made an I give up kind of gesture.

"Okay, don't hate me," she said, "but I saw McKay looking kind of shifty, and I gave him a hard time until he told me what was going on, and I just wanted to say.... Crap, if you need anything, let me know? I just wanted to be sure you were okay."

"He told you, I knew it," Jill said, slapping a palm lightly against her thigh. Being right felt sort of nice, especially when it gave her the opportunity to avoid thinking about everything else that went along with people knowing. It was only one person at the moment, but that wasn't going to always remain the case.

"He's not supposed to tell anyone," she added with a faint smile, making it obvious she didn't mind that much. If he had to tell anyone, she was glad it was Sam and she was likely the reason Rodney had finally come around anyway.
