I thought the whole point of fantasy was that you make your own rules. Genre conventions were made to be broken!!

as I keep seeing, tropes aren't bad, over-reliance on tropes just makes things cookie-cutter.

I've seen a couple of pre-reviews of The Casual Vacancy so far and it's looking like Rowling is just hitting all the genre conventions of realist bestsellers in this one. I'll have to see what the reviews are like once everyone gets to it, but it doesn't look like something I'd have been much interested in anyway.
