Though it is a bit late for the recomendation, I am a huge fan of Swiss Air. It is by far the best in flight service I have ever had. Plus, I could take advantage of my German and a bit of French. I wound up with my ticket from Chicago into Rome and out of Athens running about 780.
When you get to the airport, there is a 10 Euro train ride into termini. Tickets are pretty easy to get. From Terimini you'd have to take a train to Florence, it should be under twenty Euros. If there is a line, buy from the automatic ticket machine. It is the greatest thing ever, especially since Italians do not appear to believe in customer service.
Trains can make for interesting stories, such as, "I missed my boat out of Venice because my train hit a woman and ran two hours late."
