It might've been more than a year since he'd been to the Steamtown Mall, but it still was exactly the same as he remembered. With Pam safely at his house with Tim, he allowed himself to relax a little and try to enjoy the unexpected home visit. After all, it would be a nice switch to actually find normal clothes instead of whatever the hell the ( Read more... )

It had been a while since Veronica had been to the mall, even before the island, and the lights and sounds and size and noise were as familiar as they were foreign. It wasn't the Neptune mall, that was for sure, and she took a couple moments standing in front of the directory, foot tapping. "Hollister's good," she said. She wasn't about to admit it, but she was dying to wear something decent again instead of the box's offerings. "And there's a Bavarian Pretzel Bakery. How can we pass that up, I ask you?"

Mal stood 'hind Veronica, scowlin' at some sort o' map thin'. He was mighty uncomfortable in Jim's clothes -- save for the shoes, e'erythin' was too small for him. He was wearin' trousers Jim'd said were called 'khakis' n' a shirt that said 'Dave Matthews Band' on it as well as a pair o' Jim's work shoes. The pants felt tight, the shirt clung t' him, n' girls kept starin' at the lot o' 'em, whisperin' n' pointin' at Veronica. He could've sworn two fellas -- one wearin' a shirt that read "Sheppard/McKay '08" n' 'nother one readin' "I can kill you with my brain" -- had looked particularly funnily at him n' River. Mal had just scowled at 'em.

Silently fumin', he looked o'er the map. "I don't know what the gorram hell any o' this is 'cept for Starbucks." Lookin' o'er at River, he said, "D'y reckon Cap'n Thrace is here? Or mayhap it's a relative?"

"I don't think so," said River after a moment's study of the map. "The description says it's for coffee and she can't have that because it's not good for the baby. Maybe it's her ancestors, though. Or a descendant," she added thoughtfully. Even after all this time knowing Leoben, River still wasn't quite sure where to put them on the timeline of the 'verse.

River had noticed people looking at the four of them a little bit more than they seemed to stare at other folks, and she figured maybe they could tell that they were visitors. She also supposed that Shep and Dr. McKay must have done something before or after they came to the island in order to have their names on a shirts. Or maybe it was just a coincidence.

"What's an Orange Julius?" she asked, forgetting that they had come here for clothes. "Is that Roman?"

Jim actually had to bite down hard on his lip to keep himself from laughing at Mal's question and River's response.

"I don't think it has anything to do with Kara," he said. He was filing away what the shirt with Shep's name on it said to tell Shep later. He glanced over at River. "And Orange Julius is a type of drink. You'd probably like them; they're really good. We can stop in the food court once we get the clothes we need. Veronica, lead the way to the store you want to go to."
