It was still possible (and even likely) Karen hadn't been the one Meredith had mentioned to him. After the crap that had happened between the three of them, Jim wouldn't really be surprised if he guessed wrong and in fact she had nothing to do with things. It would make what he was doing awkward, but he had to see. Had to ask ( Read more... )

Karen had been having a surprisingly good day, now that she wasn't worried about comas and people dying anymore. Life had kind of gone back to what it was (she still couldn't think of any of this as normal), and she appreciated that. Maybe one day she'd get bored of sitting around doing nothing all day, but she'd tackle that when it came. For now, a free vacation on a weird island with new friends was as good as it got ( ... )

Jim didn't know how long he was out.

He had been in a deep enough sleep to be a little disoriented when he felt someone waking him up in a place that wasn't his bed. His eyes rolled opened and he blinked sleepily, shielding his eyes from the sun when the glare blinded him momentarily. It took a good few seconds to realize someone was standing over him. When he did finally notice her, he immediately looked sheepish, standing up and wiping at his eyes.

"Sorry," he apologized, immediately. At the very least, her presence had pretty much snapped him awake completely. "I didn't mean to - I must have dozed off waiting for you."

Karen couldn't really think up any legitimate reason for Jim to be asleep in front of her hut, and when he admitted he'd been waiting for her to come back, she was a bit surprised. She knew just being around made Jim feel awkward, and if it didn't, she still did.

"What are you doing here?" She hadn't meant it to sound anywhere near accusing, but sounding hopeful felt like the only other option and she wasn't going to be that woman.

"Oh, uh, right," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. He had planned how he was going to ask her and how he was going to react to all the ways she could react, but all of a sudden his mind was blank and he felt entirely unprepared.

"You took care of us," he finally blurted out, forgetting the fact she might not actually be the person that had been seen going in and out of their room. When he realized his mistake, he backtracked. "I mean - um. It was you Meredith saw, wasn't it? This weekend?"
