Jim and Pam had promised everyone a tour of the town, and a tour they would get. They piled into the two cars they had available - his and Pam's - and headed off to see the thrilling sights that their town had to offer ( Read more... )

Jim hadn't been to this area since he was a kid going on a field trip. He figured field trip material ought to be included on the tour, so it was one of the first places he stopped in.

"This is pretty much the big tourist spot here," he said, and he thought that said a lot. He motioned to the big building behind them. "This park is home to some um...coal mine tour. Which...is about as exciting as that sounds."

Which wasn't very exciting at all. He motioned for them to go about looking around if they wanted to.

"There's a museum about coal...stuff you can go into too, if you want. I'm pretty sure it's free."

"What, ain't y' got no coal no more on Earth That Was?" Mal spoke up, brow furrowin' with confusion. Museums back on the core planets were all dedicated t' stuff that weren't 'round no more. n' while Mal thought museums were education n' all that, he couldn't 'xactly see the in'rest in coal. Sounded 'bout as int'restin' as listenin' t' Jayne 'ttempt t' read a letter from his mama.

River thought that a tour of a coal mine was pretty much the coolest thing she had heard of in ages.

"Do they use dwarves still?" she asked, her mental image of what a coal mine must be like all jumbled up between actual history lessons and fictional stories of her childhood. She was sure that Jim must know if he had grown up here. "Can we ride in the carts on the tracks and wear hats with lights on them?"

Didn't really seem worth going in if they couldn't.

What little life the town had usually was around the shopping area. There were plenty of stores Jim figured people might want to look around in, plus the university was there and the campus made things a little more livelier.

"This is pretty much the main stretch of stuff to see," he explained to the group. "There's a lot of really old buildings like the churches around here, plus shops. You can go wherever, just try not to wander off too far. We can meet back here in an hour or so if you all want to."

River had noticed the signs that said "university" and got a little gleam in her eyes. "I want to go look down there," she said, gesturing toward what looked like a campus on any world she had ever been on. The idea of just being near all those people who were learning like she wanted to learn was just too appealing to ignore.

Outside of the Dunder Mifflin Building jim_halpert June 18 2007, 14:00:32 UTC
Jim didn't actually want to go near the place, to be honest, but he knew River probably wanted to see it. He parked in his old spot, feeling that twisting knot of dread in his stomach that he felt every morning coming to the place, then got out of the car. Once everyone was gathered, he cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck.

"Welcome to Dunder Mifflin," he said, motioning toward the building. He considered offering to see if he could get the guard to let them take a peek into the actual office, but decided against it. He'd wait until someone actually requested that.

River was, in fact, very pleased to see up close the building where Jim and Pam had worked and met and that she had seen on the video footage. However, most of the people she had also seen on that very interesting video she had already met on the island. She wondered if the people she had met would be there, and know them from the island, or if it would be some other version of those people who didn't know about the island at all.

The second theory creeped her out a little bit, and she didn't really want to know for sure if there was, as seemed possible, some other Jim inside there who wouldn't know her.

"It's smaller than I expected," was all she said, content to have seen it from the parking lot.

Pam pulled her car into a spot next to Jim's, forgoing the spot that Roy usually would park the truck in. She climbed out slowly, the last one to join the small cluster they made standing next to Jim's car.

She shifted awkwardly, standing slightly away from the rest of the group while Jim talked for a little bit. She hadn't actually been all that keen on going to Dunder Mifflin, but she'd held her tongue. She knew everyone else probably wanted to at least see it.

Once people went about looking around, Jim moved to stand next to her. He could see she was looking as uncomfortable as he was feeling. He pressed a comforting hand against the small of her back.

"Feels weird standing in front of this place again," he admitted, quietly.

Lake Scranton jim_halpert June 18 2007, 14:09:04 UTC
It was only when they pulled up that Jim realized it was probably a mistake to go there. This was the site of that episode they had seen; the one that had caused all the problems. He hoped Pam didn't remember that, because he honestly only brought them all there thinking it'd be a nice last stop; a relaxing place to end the day and eat the food they had all just bought from the deli they had passed by. It'd be like an unplanned picnic.

"This is Lake Scranton, a sad attempt at getting beach tourism," he grinned. "But a nice place none-the-less. It's usually busier here during the summer. It's too cold for this yet, I guess."

"We live on a much better beach than this," River pointed out. "But this one is nice, for not being on an island. And I don't think you can surf on that lake. But at least there is probably no giant squid. Is there?"

"Last I checked, no," he replied, staring at the lake. "Though if this is some fake version of Scranton, you never know, I guess. There's been jokes about there being a Loch Ness Monster type thing swimming around in there, though."

"Really?" River peered intently into the water. She didn't see any sort of monster, but that didn't mean it wasn't there. "Shiny," she said doubtfully, having had enough of attacking water monsters back on the island.
