It was brutal, but necessary to emphasize the sacrifice of what good has to do to triumphant over evil. Pretty much we all need to do give the state of the world.
I cried when Blaze and Chirrit went then everyone else, one by one. I saw it unspoiled and although I had an idea that there would be a high toll, I was left kind of gutted--esp when even Cassian and Jyn.
Then when all those rebels handed each other the plans at the end, the desperation in those last few mins...damn. It really gives a New Hope an all new light. And the overall tone was a perfect summary of 2016.
it was bloody brilliant, and tone wise so different to other episodes. It passes a very, very unsubtle message, but one which needs to be shared.
I too was unspoiled. I was watching thinking Star Wars... I really liked Chirrit, and he died, and then the pilot, and I started to get an inclinkling...
I went in complete unspoiled -- which I'm glad I did.
It was bloody brilliant, and told story which in these times needs to be told (and all times). I said what I posted to my mate as we wandered aimlesly home afterwards, and she just agreed.
I realized what will happen when the robot (I don't know his name. I know no name except Jyn's. I'm so bad with names. /o\) died. Then my brain remembered that they said in New Hope (I think?) that the plans have been procured under great personal costs/losses and I went NO and just knew but kept hoping that at least one would survive but... I really had to fight to not start crying in the cinema. :(

And she's: "You okay?"
I just wanted one person to survive.
