Thank you for being willing to share, Jim. I enjoy your Dresden books, which have inspired my own writing from time to time, so I'm definitely looking forward to your words of wisdom.
I'm scared to death of ever sharing my work with the public.
Good news! You don't have much to fear when it comes to the public charging up to read your writing. Hell, I had to chase people down and hold their children hostage and things to get them to read my stuff. But newbie writers just don't have a whole heck of a lot to worry about when it comes to keeping their work safely tucked away
( ... )
hahaah. Yeah, they were so terrible that everyone I hand them to reads them and says 'god damnit, he's such a bastard'. I'll have you know that the 'jim is a bastard' count is up by at least 3 since the last time ;)
Neat! I'm not an aspiring author myself, but I find discussions of the art *and* craft to be fascinating; I've always loved Sean Stewart's readings because he has some intensely interesting things to say about how he writes and how genre affects his writing.
FLIT FLIT FLIT! :) She of the mighty hair! Very harried and busy, but also very, very well. If you gotta have problems, I've got some really cool ones.
Mucho glad to see you doing this. I've been so excited to follow your books and pulishing record. Been a long time since Julianna/Bassor, Thanlis and AmberMUSH. ;) I've started writing as well, though have had to take some time out to pop out a couple of kids (the second is due in 4 weeks), and something you've already said really resonates with me, having had a ton of rejection slips from short stories already: the skipping the practicing scales and going straight to the getting paid part. I've been frustrated that I haven't been able to get anything (other than my PTSD research!) in print. I need to get back to writing for me before I can get back to writing for the reader.
Can't wait to see your thoughts! I need to thank Fred for tuning me in. :)
Now I'm gonna walk around with my brain at right angles all day, trying to wrap it around the image of Julianna in a station wagon with twin car seats. Boy I needed that. ;)
I got so many rejection slips I started a big file in a big red folder. I called it the Rose File and I swore that the first time I got a giant check, I was gonna send a photocopy of it and dead roses to everyone in that stupid folder to show them how wrong they were to spurn me.
Names in that folder included my first agent, Ricia Mainhardt, my current agent, Jennifer Jackson, my first editor, Jennifer Heddle, and several other professional editors who I am now on good terms with. I haven't gotten a huge check yet, but I'm thinking now that maybe the hate mail concept might be counterproductive.

YAY that you are well! It's lovely to see your success; you really deserve it! I call the 'harried and busy' thing a 'happy problem'.
