I don't read any of the comics in question, but yeah, the decision to undo Peter Parker's marriage through a deal with the devil did seem a little weird to me. I don't need (or even particularly want) all superheroes to be good, brave, just. But it always seemed like that was sort of the point with Spider-Man.
It's sort of interesting watching the fireball that has erupted on Marvel's message boards. Practically everybody hates the Spidey story. But, because the first few issues of an unpopular story always sell well (because of collectors, people who want to keep up with the soap opera no matter what, you know the type), sales figures are high. If sales go down in the coming months (and I expect that they will), then Marvel will have to retcon this away, no matter what Joe Quesada wants.
On the other hand, the "Civil War" story, which caused most of the other negative character changes that I mentioned, remains fairly popular. (Short version: After a hero/villain fight blows up a school, the government passes a law that essentially drafts all active superheroes, outlawing secret identities and vigilantism. The superheroes all end up choosing sides over this, and the resultant fight gets much nastier than superhero in-fighting usually gets.) Heck, even I sort of liked Civil War in the beginning, but they've dragged it out for way
( ... )
Actually, I take that back; "Civil War" only screwed up Iron Man, Reed Richards, & Captain America. The other characters managed to get screwed up independently of it.
I agree that marvel sucks but,

it's not the characters that's crappy, its those that run their lives. from the crappy writers to the greedy bastard lawyers they hire for "copyright infringement" I just hate their asses now. Love their characters. HATE Marvel. Dark Horse and Buffy forever!!!
