Absolutely agreed on the epistolary friendship thing. I have gamers that I've been playing with 3x weekly for almost 9 years (end of May!) now. I've met a lot of good friends and increased my closeness to others that way.
I do think that for adult gaming groups it's easier if you have a core group that knows each other. For instance, we're probably going to work on setting up a Dr Who RPG in the next month or two. It will be us and another couple we know and we may recruit a few folks, but the social center will be the two couples. That gibes with my experience with various RPG circles in Houston. Of course, we have/had established social networks in Austin and Houston, which we didn't have in NJ, where finding a game was a lot harder.
