My mother has been a technical writer for a long time. She's worked on a bunch of Sun and Cisco projects, and contracts through a company called TechProse. Let me know if you'd like me to put you in touch with her.

we had like 60 people show up for our tiny little launch party but the boss was all excited because it was like 50 more people then she had for her tiger launch

Breaking into technical writing is pretty easy considering no one wants to do it (; What you WILL need though is a good portfolio with some excellent examples of writing. In your case, since you're a newbie you will have to just create something on the fly. I think if you take the class at Foothill you can use a lot of your homework for your portfolio (;

Oh, also, you should definitely make an online resume which has some writing examples. Yep.
