Grammar Nazi

I don't think I'm usually much of a grammar nazi, but it tends to get up my goat when other people try to be but fail. The specific example I'm referring to is when people say "an historic" instead of "a historic". I would have thought that whether or not you use it as "an" would depend on whether or not you dropped the "h" in your pronunciation, ( Read more... )

For what it is worth, I know it is what you are supposed to do but have no idea why. It confused me no end when I studied history...for a while I just thought all the historians were stupid.

While it may be commonplace, it is wrong. I've seen many instances where language protocol seems to be accepted and altered in specific academic fields. I try to avoid such issues myself tho.

I'd say at a guess it has occured as it is relatively difficult to say 'Ah-hiss-torik' rather than 'Ahn-iss-toric', particularly if you have to say it all the time.

The Enlish language ONLY allows for the word 'an' when the next word begins with a vowel. 'an animal' 'an electrical fault' 'an olive' etc. Feel free to tell anyone who uses the word 'an' with a follwing word that begins with a consenant to F/O. It's wrong.
