If your machine is out of warranty I'd make sure whoever repairs it gives you a warranty on the repair - like 3 months or something. I'd call a few people, ask them their hourly rates and if they will give a warranty on their repair. Go for whoever sounds decent on the phone, will give you a warranty and has a lower hourly rate than the rest.
Keep in mind $100 or so would get you a decent machine off the trading post or from a moving sale.

I have ahad machines repaird for $50 up to and including $400 (bloody fisher & paykel thing but was worth it)
