Updating your values

I have always been knowing for having strong desire, or wishing, or values as a theme in my life and interactions.  Frequently, when these things come up, my friends turn and say, "well, that seems like your sort of thing".  I've always identified as someone who knows what I want.  Even strangers, after brief conversations with me, characterize me ( Read more... )

I don't know if this will help shed any light, but I had a similar experience when I first started looking for work in the 'real world.' I foreswore networking altogether, disdainful of the concept of getting a job through connections rather than pure merit. Eventually I was convinced that this was folly, and accepted the concept of getting interviews (if not positions) through recommendation. I'm glad that I did; now that I've been in the working world for a while, I can see that my conceptions of the hiring process were somewhat misinformed. Even groups that take great pains to hire on merit have to choose interviewees through looking at second-order signals, and that process is often fraught with error to say the least ( ... )

Leverage your networks as much as you can. The only thing wrong with trading on the advantages of your educational quality is when you start judging others poorly for their lack of name brand...
