Regarding scenario #1, why not bring something enjoyable? I kinda assume from the nature of the question that the resources to survive, at least for a while, are present, and thus books for fuel wouldn't last very long anyway. Besides which a large, good book could become fuel once you're done reading.
I'm tempted to say, "How to make a boat for dummies"
But serious, I think I would only need one book about survival/health--you can put a lot in one book. If the island had plenty of resources (I take "desert" to mean "deserted") then I'd want a book focused on health maintenance, e.g. nutrition, not just short-term survival. As to the rest, a mix of stuff I have and have not already read. Thus:
-War and Peace (Tolstoy) -Hitchhiker Trilogy (Adams) (I have it in one volume) -Science and Human Behavior (Skinner) -Chronicle Of The World (I'll have to show you the book some time)

So, not about books, instead about people, but on an island either way!
