Part One, Part Two

Jinki heard the car coming up the long gravel driveway and rushed to greet his friends and welcome them in out of the winter storm that was battering Jeju. Once they had made it safely inside and kicked off their shoes, Jinki thumped their backs and nearly shook their hands off their arms.

Jinki ushered his friends into the living room, where they sat around the low table he’d prepared with snacks and enough soju to last them into the night. Soon they were reliving memories of middle school mischief. Jinki’s friends regaled him with tales of army life while they grilled him about which celebrities’ phone numbers he’d collected.

“Jihun-ah, it’s good to see you looking so healthy. You were the scrawniest kid in our class,” Jinki commented when his soju-marinated friend flexed his muscles and tried to prove he was as “beastly” as any idol.

“The army can make a man out of anyone,” Woojin teased, punching his formerly skinny friend in the arm.

“And what happened to you?” Jihun asked Jinki. “You were such a pudgy little kid.”

“I guess I’ve been subjected to a different sort of training regimen,” Jinki mused, smoothing his hands down his toned torso.

His friends snickered lewdly. “It must be hard to keep the weight on when you have to take care of a different noona every night,” Woojin blurted out.

“It’s not like that,” Jinki countered, laughing along with his friends. “We really do live like monks most of the time.”

Jinki poured yet another round for his smiling friends.

“You’ve got thousands of fangirls creaming their panties for you, but you’re not really a man until you’ve done your army service,” Woojin asserted knowingly, clinking glasses with Jihun.

Jinki nodded in acceptance of the commonly held opinion.

“Wouldn’t you say a man is someone who supports his family?” he asked quietly.

“Yes, ‘Mr. Filial,’ we all know you bought your father a car,” Woojin mocked gently.

They were all quiet for a few moments while the rain pounded against the windows and the wind howled through the palm trees around the house.

“You guys are my oldest friends, you know that, don’t you?” Jinki said, staring into his glass, his brow furrowed.

Woojin and Jihun exchanged concerned looks.

“Of course,” Jihun confirmed, clasping Jinki’s shoulder affectionately.

“I can trust you, right?” he asked, glancing between his two friends imploringly.

“What is it?” Woojin patted Jinki’s other shoulder, mirroring Jihun's concern.

Jinki took a deep breath and puffed out his cheeks before rubbing the back of his neck nervously.

“Remember Yun Mija?” he asked quietly.

“The hot science nerd with the big-?”

“Watch it,” Jinki warned as Woojin motioned crudely to his chest.

“Sure, I remember her,” Jihun answered, smacking Woojin in the back of the head. “Didn’t you guys have lunch dates for a while?”

Jinki nodded.

“What about her?” Woojin asked.

“Jagiya!” Jinki shouted over his shoulder.

His friends’ huge eyes registered their surprise.

“I’d like you to meet my wa--wife,” Jinki stuttered, rising to his feet as she appeared in the doorway and was greeted by two dropped jaws.

A miniature version of Jinki peaked out from behind her floral skirt.

“And my son,Younghak.”
