For the 3 people that read my journal, yes I am still alive. I just haven't felt like updating since nothing ever happens to me I can really talk about. Well... I've moved to Dayton, OH and started classes for my Master's in EE. Just refresher courses in math the first two semesters so I'm on a 2 year plan to keep me in line for my promotion ( Read more... )

Sometimes I think I whine too much as it is, I really don't need an EmoJournal. ;)

w00t! And I'm about to head, er, east of my current location. All the cool kids are ditching the East Coast.

Unfortunately, while I'd love to follow in your footsteps and MSEE at some point, Cornell doesn't have a unified CS and EE[1] curriculum, and I failed to realize how much of a problem that is until after I graduated. I can design a basic RISC microprocessor from the gate level, but am really weak on circuit analysis and know jack about power transmission systems, microwave propagation, or semiconductors.

[1] Memo to anyone who knows someone in high school or just started college: Stay away from a straight CS unless you're taking it as a precursor to a PhD in math, or with a double major in something useful.

I still say CS is a better choice than CE. Though to go with a hardware focus might as well go EE. CS seemed like a better software option with a little hardware understanding with the idea it might make for better coding on smaller systems. But then... I don't have a CS or CE degree so I could be totally wrong. :X

CS, or at least the CS program I was in, is math-lite. It would be just fine as preparation for an MS or PhD in CS for someone who likes being involved in deep magic (PhD) or heavy wizardry (MS), provided that care is taken to select a school that includes software engineering ( ... )

And I should point out that P2 does in fact imply that I consider a computer system to be useless if it doesn't satisfy the customer requirements and do so with satisfactory response time and uptime. As you know, this is a minority position in the government; hence the Virtual Case File, Army Knowledge Online, and many other fine steaming piles.
